Some backyards just need a full reset. Not a patch job, not a few new plants - a complete tear-out and rebuild from the ground up. That's exactly what we did here. We're talking irrigation, a new paver patio, a boulder seating wall, concrete curbing, fresh plantings, decorative rock, and mulch. The only thing left to do is wait on spring grass to fill in the lawn area, and this space will be completely dialed in.
The paver patio is the anchor of the whole design. We went with a rounded edge that softens the look and keeps it from feeling boxy or generic. The dark border course gives it a clean, finished line that ties into the surrounding rock and curbing. It's a detail that's easy to overlook in photos, but in person it's one of the first things you notice.
The boulder seating wall was one of our favorite parts of this build. Large natural boulders were placed to frame the patio edge and create casual, built-in seating without any of the bulk or permanence of a traditional block wall. They feel like they belong there. That's the goal with hardscaping - it should look like it grew out of the landscape, not like it was dropped in.
On the softscaping side, we brought in a nice mix of ornamental grasses, evergreen shrubs, and young trees, all bedded out in fresh dark mulch with a river rock dry creek detail running through the plantings. The concrete curbing keeps every bed edge clean and locked in place - no edging, no creep, no mess. The irrigation system underneath ties it all together and makes sure everything establishes well without the homeowner having to think about it.
What we ended up with is a backyard that's genuinely functional and built to last. Every element - the hardscaping, the plantings, the curbing, the irrigation - was planned to work together as a system. Once that grass fills in, this space is going to be exactly what a backyard should be.
